In Irish mythology a leprechaun is a type of fairy said to have inhabited Ireland before the arrival of the Celts.
Leprechauns are often associated with ‘fairy forts’ and ‘fairy rings’, often the sites of pre-celtic earthworks or drumlins. They usually take the form of old men who enjoy mischief. Their trade is that of a shoemaker or cobbler.
